Program Information

What is survival swim?

Survival swim teaches infants and toddlers how to float, breathe, and reach safety in the water. This life-saving skill builds real confidence, not just play-based comfort.

How does survival swim work?

Lessons are short (15 minutes), frequent (2–4x/week), and highly individualized. With consistency, children retain and master the swim-float-survive technique quickly.

How long is the survival swim program?

Most children complete the program in 18–24 private lessons. Progress depends on age, experience, consistency, and comfort in the water.

What are maintenance lessons?

After survival swim, we may recommend 1x/week lessons to sharpen skills, build confidence, or re-acclimate after time away from the water.

How often should my child attend lessons?

For best results, we recommend 3–4 lessons per week. Repetition builds confidence and muscle memory quickly.

How is SwimKids different from franchise swim schools?

SwimKids is locally owned and offers trauma-informed, survival-focused instruction tailored to each child. Our instructors are highly trained, not seasonal hires, and we teach real life-saving skills.

What if my child is scared of the water?

That’s very common! Our instructors use calm, supportive methods to help children feel safe. Most students relax and engage within the first few lessons.

What if my child is already a swimmer?

We still conduct an evaluation. Your child may benefit from private technique lessons before joining group classes. Evaluations are offered Saturdays and weekdays.

How much training do your instructors have?
  • Survival swim instructors: 100+ in-water hours + 6-week mentorship with SSDN Master Instructor
  • Group/stroke school instructors: 40+ hours with a senior instructor
  • All staff receive ongoing education and safety training.
What certifications do your instructors have?

Our team holds certifications in survival swim, Aqua CPR, trauma-informed instruction, and infant safety—with over a decade of experience in many cases.

What if my child has a medical condition?

Please consult your pediatrician. Let us know about any medical conditions on your enrollment form so we can tailor the safest approach.

Will my child be drown-proof?

No child is ever fully drown-proof. But with strong skills, consistent lessons, and parental supervision, survival swim offers a powerful layer of protection.

What does the AAP say about infant swim lessons?

In 2019, the American Academy of Pediatrics began recommending formal swim lessons starting at age 1, especially for families near pools or open water.
